LESSON 6 OF 8

Lesson 6: Lesson 6 · Examine names and prayers

Maran is an Aramaic/Syriac title meaning our Lord. Historical discussions connect it with some proposed explanations of community names. A machzor prayer also contains the name Yeshua with a title conventionally rendered Prince of the Presence. These deserve exact reading, not guesses based on sound alone. H09 H10 H11

Ask when a name appears, who uses it and whether the proposed explanation is recorded at the time or much later. For prayers, distinguish the printed edition from the composition's earlier history.
